EducationTuition Culture Affects Academic Growth

Tuition Culture Affects Academic Growth

With the grade-oriented education system in India, it’s not surprising to see the tuition culture trending these days. Students go to tuition for multiple reasons like resolving learning difficulties, achieving grades, and getting shortcuts for exam preparations. The difference is that some of them willingly go for it, and some are just forced into it because of peer pressure and the fear of lagging. While it’s prestigious to say that our kids attend tuitions, most of us don’t realize the impact of this tuition culture on the kid’s academic growth.

Here are four ways you didn’t know the tuition culture is affecting your kid’s academic growth.

1. Reduced learning experience

With a fixed schedule of attending private tutoring every day after school, students lose interest in listening to the lectures at school because they can always learn it at their private tutoring. This also demotivates the teachers who teach at school who skip lessons, as they also know most of the students attend private tutoring outside school. This affects the children’s learning experience and makes them perceive going to school as a boring task as they don’t get any value out of it.

2. Stress

Families who send their kids to private tutoring are ready to pay an expensive fee and equally expect their kids to benefit from it. Because of this tuition culture, the kids face the pressure to perform and feel mental stress. Being under constant stress daily causes burnout in children, manifesting in other attitudes and behavioural issues like negative thinking and procrastination. Some of these might permanently affect their personality and, in turn, affect their academic performance.

3. Social isolation

Kids spend most of their day at school, and when they return, they still must go to tuition. This doesn’t leave any room for social interactions with friends and sucks away the time with family. Because of this, the kid feels more detached from the rest of us. This affects the child’s ability to bond with others, and they hardly build any interpersonal relationships.

4. No fun

While childhood is all about learning and playing, tuition culture leaves no time for fun for the kids. Studying all day makes them look at education as just an arduous task that is no more enjoyable. This also keeps them from discovering any other passions that they might have and limits their experience of life in childhood.

All the above factors clearly indicate that tuition culture can immensely affect not just academic growth but also the child’s mental well-being. Parents need to understand that the kids need to study for personal growth and hence take charge of giving them a good learning experience rather than forcing things on them. While it can be beneficial to have private tutoring to help your child with learning difficulties, it’s of greater importance that we moderate the amount of time they spend studying every day and ensure that they have time to relax. This will not just help in avoiding avoid burnout but also work in favour of their long-term well-being.
