How To Make a Vision Board That Actually Works

A vision board or a dream board is a visual representation of your dream life.

But why is it such a big deal?

We all dream about our futures, right?

Where do we want to be? How do we want to look? How much money do we want to make? What is our dream house like?

But then, a lot of these dreams just remain dreams. We get sidetracked with life and what it throws at us every moment.

Having a vision board helps you stay focused and not lose sight of what you want in your life. They help make those dreams come true using this wonderful thing called ‘manifestation’.

Why vision boards work?

We, humans, are visual creatures. It is easier to believe in things that you see than those you can’t see. When the dreams are in your head, it’s hazy, inconsistent, and seems far fetched. But when you put your dreams on a vision board, it feels more real. You can look at it every day and believe more in it every day.

As you believe, so you become.

This isn’t a modern age concept. Some versions of this quote can be seen in all religious texts. The concept of manifestation is ancient and real. You attract what you put out.

And vision boards are a great way of practicing it. So, are you ready to make a vision board that actually works and start manifesting those beautiful dreams?

What to include in your vision board?

You can include any and every goal that you want to achieve in your vision board. You can make a board focused on one goal or your overall lifestyle. Here is a list of goal categories that you might want to consider:

  • Personal goals: It can include things like spirituality, self-care or education.
  • Career goals: Want a promotion? Want to make $10,00,00? Put it on the board.
  • Financial goals: You can add your income, savings and investment goals.
  • Relationship: Where do you want to be in the relationship aspect of your life? Be it with friends, family or your partner.
  • Travel: Put up the images of all the gorgeous places you want to visit.
  • Lifestyle: You can curate your dream house, wardrobe or any other dream lifestyle aspect.
  • Health: Health and fitness goals are also some things that you can add.

Now that you have an idea of what kinds of dreams you can put on your vision board, let’s talk about how you are going to put them up to be visually inspiring. The following are the elements you can use in the vision board:

  • Pictures (magazine cut-outs or printed ones)
  • Quotes and phrases
  • Written version of your dreams
  • Words that inspire
  • Decoration
  • Tokens of previous achievements

You can go crazy with it. There is really just one rule: it should be inspiring to you

Step by step approach to create the vision board

Time to build that beautiful and inspiring vision board for you!

Step 1: List down your goals

The first step is to have a vision.

Remember the categories of goals we discussed? Use that to list down all the goals you can think of under those categories. Don’t worry if the list runs too long; just get everything out of your system.

Once you are done listing, you narrow things down to a few.

Ask these questions:

  • Which of these goals are your priorities right now?
  • Which of these can be achieved in a year?

The answer to these questions is what is going on that dream board.

Step 2: Decide on a medium

The most common way of creating a vision board is using a mesh frame, a canvas, the fridge, or the wall. They are usually big and bold and sit in a prominent area in the room.

If this doesn’t sound like something you are into, don’t worry! There are other options:

Digital vision board: You can make a digital vision board using software like Canva, Photoshop or even a random collage maker. This can be displayed on your desktop home screen or your phone lock screen.

Portable vision board: You want a physical vision board but don’t want to display it? Or do you want to be able to carry it around? You can simply pick a small scrapbook or just a paper clip and put together all the elements you like.

But remember, whichever option you choose, you must make sure that you see it regularly. The more you see it, the better.

Step 3: Look for inspiration

You know what to put and where to put it. Now comes the “how to put” part.

For this, I love to look around for inspiration, and my favourite place is Pinterest. There are so many ideas and examples from which you can drive inspiration. Just go search for ‘vision board’ or ‘vision board inspiration’ on Pinterest. You can also look at Google images or watch some YouTube videos.

I’m also adding some vision board inspirations for you below in the article.

Step 4: Collect necessary elements

This is the most fun part for me: Finding elements that depict my goals and inspire me to work for them.

If you want to travel to the Maldives, get a picture of the Maldives.

If you want to become an entrepreneur, get a picture of an entrepreneur or a quote that inspires you.

Want a modular kitchen at home? Find an image that does justice to what you have in mind.

Want to become more confident? Find a picture that displays confidence, or just use the word ‘confident’ on your board!

You get it, right? Refer to the elements listed above and get creative with them.

If you are making a physical vision board, make sure you have other basic supplies like glue or clips.

Step 5: Put together the vision board

You are ready to put all the pieces together and make the vision board.

Play around with the alignment. It’s okay if it’s messy or haphazard. As long as it inspires you, it is good. You can keep the inspirations you referred to by your side while doing this.

Step 6: Display it

Once you are done creating it, put it in a place that you see regularly. It can be near your work desk, next to the TV or on the fridge.

We have already covered where to display a digital vision board.

Now, watch your dreams manifest themselves.

Here is one thing you need to remember: Your vision board isn’t fixed. As you go about life, your dreams and goals change, and your board can change along with it.
